Hi, I just realized I never wrote anything about myself on here, so here goes:
I am 41 years old, my husband of 16 years was murdered in May of 2003. We have two children, my daughter is 20 and out on her own, my son is 10 and with me. He was only 18 months when his father died. In December of 2009, I was laid off from my job of 10 years. I did take advantage of being able to go back to school and earn a degree and started the community college Fall of 2010. The first of this year I had to drop out of school because I was taking care of my late husbands father (non of his other family members cared to take care of him) he became bed bound and I was having trouble getting him on medicaid so I had to quit school so I could be there for him 24/7. He passed away in March. This summer I lost my home, my car, and my son and I found ourselves having to live between homes with friends, waiting to get approved for public housing. This journey has been humbling and eye opening. I have met some really great hearted people and I have met others who want to judge you because they just assume that you are working the system. I am looking forward to recieving my degree in May 2012 and hopfully finding myself a decent job. I can't wait to find us our own home again, a decent car, and not have to rely on food stamps to feed my child.
All I ask is that when you see someone that is paying for groceries with a food stamp card and wearing nice clothes, do not assume they are working the system. They may just be in the boat that I am in and many, many others. All it takes is one life altering event to take away everything you have!
